HISTORY The Post
at Fort Oglethorpe was an 814-acre Army Post (1902 – 1946), sold as
surplus after World War II. The City of Fort Oglethorpe was chartered
in 1949 as the first new city in Georgia in 25 years. Fort Oglethorpe’s
historic district centers around Barnhardt Circle and the original polo
field-parade ground. Listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, Barnhardt Circle is surrounded by original officer’s homes
(1902) in the Classic Renaissance Revival style popularized by the Columbian
Exposition of 1892. Preserving the area’s military history is
the 6th Cavalry Museum and the Chickamauga National Military
Park, the nation’s largest and oldest Civil War Battlefield Park.
